The Starfish Story

A man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.” “But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”

Those two minutes...

I just love those two minutes after I get out of the shower where I feel clean and cool and nice, before I start sweating bullets again in the ninety degree weather. I love the starched feeling of my clothes after they have been dried all crunchy by the sun!

Today I worked at the girls home. I spoke some Twi to the housemothers which made them laugh so hard I thought they were going to cry. Hahahaha! Two of the newborns are gone... don't know where, and I'm not sure I want to know! I think it would be rude to ask. There are a lot of things you wouldn't think are rude in another culture. Its tough to get used to!

I chatted with Rebecca (a friend from Chicago who lives permanently in the outskirts of Kumasi) and we collaborated about special needs children we have been involved with. I told her about a small orphanage in the Brong Ahafo region run by a Dutch man. The orphanage takes in children with disabilities and special needs and is the epitome of what an orphanage should be. They have physical therapy, a swimming pool, assistive equipment, and so much more. The best part is that most of the staff is Ghanaians. Each child is assigned a staff member, so they get lots of one on one time with their "mothers"! Rebecca and I will make plans to visit their home sometime soon. I will probably with meet her next weekend and check out all of her projects!

No new news on the bus. I'm putting together a fundraising page, so more on that later.
Bye for now!
