The Starfish Story

A man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.” “But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”

A lot has been going on! Yesterday I met with Kojo and the other Deaf people. We went to Atimatim and I saw Medina, who is attending our classes every day from 3-5:30 and she can already spell her name and sign a little bit! I was so happy to see her. She was all smiles and was so proud of her signing.

Atimatim is more rural than Kumasi. A lot of children would be walking in my direction, and when they saw me and my white skin, they would stop in their tracks, turn around, and run as fast as they could the other way! Some kids dared their friend to get close to me, so when he did I made a scary sound and pretended to grab him! They were laughing so hard and it was so funny.

Today we woke up at 6AM to go see Emanuella at her school in Cape Coast for the last visiting day of the year. There was a two hour long 'prayer meeting' which I don't even know how to describe. People were singing gospel and dancing (like a concert) one second, and then the next moment there would be people yelling at spirits to be expelled from them and people were sobbing or on their knees chanting prayers.

I just sat in the middle of it overwhelmed for two hours! It was the most crazy culturally shocking experience I have witnessed thus far. I almost was so overwhelmed I stepped outside to get some air. It was a crazy day! Then after we visited we came home.

I got my hair braided a couple days ago. They braided a weave into it so my hair now reaches my butt. It is so heavy and is painful sometimes. It is also VERY itchy, and at one point I actually checked myself for lice because I thought there might be some in there!

Tomorrow I'm visiting Rebecca in Atonsu Agogo after church at 6:30 AM. People like to get up early here if you can tell......

Bye for now.
Me and my old friend reunited in Atimatim

Visiting Emanuella. My hair... OIE VHEY!

Found him sitting on the road rubbing his face with dirt....  whatever makes him happy!
